Pre-College Study Abroad: Rome is an exciting program that invites students entering grades 10, 11, or 12 to travel to Rome, Italy to experience what life would be like as an undergraduate student at Temple University Rome. 

Home to one of the oldest and most prestigious US university programs in Italy, Temple University Rome prepares students to become global citizens by equipping them with enhanced cross-cultural, linguistic, analytic, and problem-solving skills.

Through this unique 10-day program, you will learn from Temple Rome faculty as a member of a small group of American and international students, using Rome itself as your classroom. You'll explore Italy's past, present, and future through interdisciplinary, hands-on lessons and activities and discover why Rome is known as the Eternal City.

This program allows you to survey multiple topics, with workshops that change each day. Topics may include Italian history, Italian art and architecture, Italian language, Roman mythology, the Mafia in modern Italy, photography, environmental sustainability, food culture, and international business. Workshops (with the exception of Italian language) are taught in English by multi-lingual Temple Rome professors.

Travel Information

Students will live in Rome for the duration of the program.  The academic program will include many off campus activities in the city and day trips in the region.  The final schedule will be presented to the students in a pre-departure orientation.

Admissions Requirements, Cost, and Deadlines

You must generally have a 3.0 GPA or better to be considered for this program. You must also be under 18 years old at the time of travel. To get started, complete the free online application. You will also be asked to participate in an online interview.

Partial scholarships are available. To be considered for a scholarship, indicate that you want to be considered by responding "yes" to the scholarship question on the application. Local (Roman-based students) can participate at a reduced price if they spend the duration of the workshop living at home and participating in day activities only.

What are the benefits of enrolling in Pre-College Study Abroad: Rome?

Pre-College Study Abroad: Rome is a program only for high school students, designed to allow you to explore multiple interconnected academic fields through hands-on learning and through travel. You will benefit from learning in a small, diverse group of high school students; working with Temple faculty and staff; exploring a new city and culture; stepping outside of your comfort zone to develop your independence and confidence; and understanding the academic options available to you as a future college student, such as the Temple University Rome Entry Year (TREY) program.

How much does participating in Pre-College Study Abroad: Rome cost?

The cost of Temple’s 10-day program in Rome is $5000 which includes program fees, 2- college credits, housing, meals and excursions. Students pay flight costs of $1760.  Flights must be purchased through Temple.  Commuting Italian students may attend for a fee of $2200.

Are there any financial aid or scholarship opportunities?

Yes. You will need to fill out an additional page on your application to be considered for aid and scholarships. Unfortunately, full scholarships are typically not possible.

How many students will be in this program?

This program will be limited to no more than 21 students.We encourage you to apply early for your best chance of getting a spot in the program.  The application opens Jan 1 and closes March 15.  Application received after April 1 will be reviewed if space remains in the program.

Who is eligible to apply for this program?

Students who are entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the fall of 2025 are eligible to apply. If you don't have a valid passport at the time of application, you must have one by May 1. You must also be under age 18 at the time of travel.

Who will be teaching in and supervising the program?

Instructors in this program are all Temple University faculty based on the Rome Campus. The program is organized and supervised by the Temple Pre-College staff and the Temple Rome student life staff. The staff: student ratio will be no greater than 1:10.

Will I be allowed to explore Rome on my own?

No. All program activities, sightseeing, etc. will be done as a group. Leaving campus without an adult, or separating from the group is not permitted.

Enrollment Requirements and Deadlines

Pre-College Study Abroad: Rome requires an application to be admitted. This program accepts students of all academic backgrounds and interests who express a desire to participate in the program and to learn. Click "Apply Now" to get started with your free application.

Application Deadline
The application opens on December 1 and closes on April 1. Priority is given to applications received by March 1. Due to the limited number of seats an interview is required in addition to your transcripts, essay and teacher recommendation.

Notification of Acceptance
You will be notified one-two weeks after your interview whether you are accepted and will be given instructions at that time on how to claim your space in your program by paying your 10% deposit.

Enrolling in the Program
Once you receive your acceptance, you are considered enrolled in the program when you pay your 10% deposit. Information on how to pay this deposit will be provided to you in your acceptance email, along with how to purchase your flight. The deadline to enroll is March 15, with later registrations accepted if space allows through April 15.
