Are you a parent or guardian who is helping your student prepare for pre-college? Below are some important resources for how you can support your student in having a successful pre-college experience this summer.
Resources for Parents and Guardians of Pre-College Students
Please thoroughly review the Next Steps page with your student and ensure they have completed all required next steps to arrive on campus. This includes paying their balance, filling out any onboarding paperwork, and preparing to arrive on campus.
If your student is living on campus, review the packing list. This list is also available on their Housing Form on their noncredit.temple.edu account, the same account they used to apply for their pre-college program.
- Encourage independence.
Temple Pre-College is an exciting opportunity for your student to experience college academics and student life, to develop their interests, and to meet new friends. It is also a great time to practice the independence they will need to develop as a college student. Allow your student to practice their problem-solving skills if and when things come up. Encourage them to talk to their instructors, pre-college mentors, and pre-college staff directly about any issues or concerns they have. - Encourage attendance and participation.
Temple Pre-College is not a summer camp. It is an academic, college preparatory program. Therefore, we respectfully request that you do not make other conflicting plans during your student’s Temple Pre-College experience that would remove them from class. Their attendance and participation are required for them to get the most academically and socially out of their program. - Encourage responsibility and professionalism.
Like college students, Temple Pre-College students are encouraged and expected to take responsibility for their own work, time management, and conduct. Our staff will provide guidance and support to help students develop these skills. Please help us help your student by encouraging them to complete their assignments on time, communicate with their instructors when they need help (or know they will be absent due to illness or emergency), and arrive on time to class each day. - Encourage your student to embrace a growth mindset.
The Temple Pre-College staff is committed to helping your student succeed. We are here to help your student develop their interests and pursue their passions. We are also here to help your student learn from their instructors, their peers, and themselves. In this new environment, encourage your student to embrace challenges and to try new things with bravery, knowing that they will grow from their experiences here. - Read and review our policies with your student.
Temple Pre-College has policies in place designed to promote the academic and social development, as well as the safety, of each pre-college student. Please be sure to review all policies with your student prior to their arrival on campus. While we try to ensure a comfortable learning environment that meets students’ needs, we cannot bend the rules or make exceptions to the rules for any student.
Temple Pre-College students are required to attend all classes regularly and punctually. Participation and attendance are important factors in gaining the most from these programs. A student should not miss more than two classes and should arrive on time each day. Excessive absences or tardiness may result in dismissal from the program.
Excused absences are permitted in the event of illness or family emergency. Residential students must notify their Pre-College Mentor by 9:00 a.m. the day of the absence. The custodial parents or guardians of commuting students should notify the Temple Pre-College office by 9:00 a.m. if their student will be absent that day. Absence notifications can be sent via email to precollege@temple.edu.
We encourage pre-college students to stay for the weekend and will provide on- or off-campus activities on Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays. However, we do recognize that some students may need to leave for some or all of the weekend.
During the program, your student will be able to initiate an online request to leave campus for the weekend. The request will be sent to the parent or guardian email on file for approval. Once the request is approved, we will work with the student to ensure they leave campus only with their approved contact. Please be advised that no other forms of request (e.g. email, voicemail) will be accepted, and that photo IDs will be checked to determine that the a student leaves only with the person indicated on the request form.
Residential students have meals and snacks included as part of their pre-college program. Some families may wish to add additional funds for spending money on campus, and can do so using Diamond Dollars, Temple's campus-based debit solution. Diamond Dollars can be used at multiple locations on campus (including the dining hall) to pay for meals, snacks, laundry, and other supplies. Parents and families can monitor their students' accounts and add additional funds throughout the program if desired. Work with your student through this tutorial to be added as a guest on their account.
Note that non-residential or commuting students may also use this tutorial to add funds to their Diamond Dollars accounts for on-campus spending if they wish to do so, but it is not required.
To make a deposit on your student's account, please use the Diamond Dollars website. Note that you will need your student's 9-digit TUID number to make a deposit.
The safety of our students is of utmost importance to Temple University. Because pre-college students are minors, there are additional safety policies in place for them. Safety policies are posted on our FAQ page.
Temple University no longer requires COVID-19 vaccination for students, faculty or staff. Temple strongly recommends that students, faculty and staff stay current on all age-appropriate vaccinations, including for COVID-19, as the vaccine continues to prevent severe disease.
Please review the following policies with your student prior to their arrival on campus. These policies are also published in your student’s onboarding forms under “My Applications” in their noncredit.temple.edu student account.
