 Courtney Kater ’23

Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Major, College of Liberal Arts

This is Courtney Kater, a College of Liberal Arts student and a crusader for LGBTQ+ rights. When exploring internship opportunities, Kater considered both their interest in law and passion for social justice and equal rights. They ended up landing a position at Lambda Legal, the nation’s oldest and largest LGBTQIA+ advocacy nonprofit, and were excited to be able to combine their passions and make a difference in the LGBTQIA+ community—a community that Kater calls home.

“As a queer person, I have always wanted to do whatever I can in the movement to make the world better for other queer people. It’s such an honor to learn from what Lambda Legal does and get a different perspective on its advocacy.”

 Chris Berger ’23

Media and Production Studies Major, Klein College of Media and Communication

This is Chris Berger, a Klein senior and behind-the-scenes technical director at Temple Update, the university’s student TV station. While studying abroad in Rome, Berger was called on for the opportunity of a lifetime. Berger traveled to London to make his on-air debut when he was tasked with broadcasting Queen Elizabeth II’s passing—live. Thanks to Temple’s subscription to CNN Newsource—a global content distribution platform—the university had a five-minute live satellite spot in which Berger reported from London to Temple’s Main Campus in Philadelphia. Berger then went to Buckingham Palace, where he recorded footage of the floral tributes to the queen and conducted interviews at Green park for a second live broadcast.

“It was a whirlwind of events, and telling this story for the university was a big responsibility. I was excited for this unique opportunity I felt only Temple could offer. We could have used CNN’s coverage of the queen’s passing, but having our own reporter on the ground allows us to put a Temple spin on it.”

 Gabrielle Widjaja ’22

Biochemistry Major, College of Science and Technology

No one ever expected a tornado to hit Temple University’s Ambler campus. When disaster struck in 2021, College of Science and Technology student Gabrielle Widjaja saw the opportunity to get involved in hands-on research at the Temple Ambler Field Station

Widjaja, alongside other interns at the Temple Ambler Field Station, focused on disturbance ecology research, which involved reconstructing what the surrounding area looked like when the tornado hit, what the forest floor looked like and how the local animals responded to these changes. And, while she was conducting post-tornado research, she had also undertaken independent research projects that built off of those important studies.

“I think what is amazing is that the Field Station has taken this extremely difficult circumstance and opened up entirely new research opportunities. You have to adapt to what you are given. Even in the lab, most experiments don’t initially go as planned. We keep on trying and finding new methods that work, which can lead to greater efficiency and better research results.”

 Yesh Khanna ’23

Global Studies Major, College of Liberal Arts

For student and accessibility pioneer Yesh Khanna, home is on the other side of the world in India. Though, finding family at Temple came easy with the support of his classmates, International Student Affairs and the Disability Resources and Services.

Khanna served as director of accessibility for Temple Student Government (TSG) with the goal of expanding disability resources beyond education and academics. Also, being an international student himself, he helped the director of student needs create a program for international students to better integrate them into American culture. Through his experiences with TSG and his passion for policy, he was able to fulfill his desire to bring about positive change.

“The particular thing that I learned about Temple, and more so about the United States as a country, was to value my experience here. The proper steps are in place, like the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) compliance routes that ensure people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. It felt like a place where I, as a person who has a disability, could reach my full potential.”

 Audrey Ward ’22

Theater Studies Major, School of Theater, Film and Media Arts

This is Audrey Ward, a Philadelphia-based screen and stage actor and recent Temple graduate. During her time onstage in the Walnut Street Theatre production of Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance, Ward would spend full days studying and attending classes, and then hop the Broad Street Line subway bound for the theater. It’s an opportunity few students have, given the depth and breadth of the professional actors who grace the Walnut’s stage every season and its esteem as the country’s oldest continuously operating theater. Ward worked alongside Mary Martello, considered one of the most established and accomplished professional stage actors in Philadelphia.

“I just knew I wanted to be an actor. I fell in love with it. Then I came to look at Temple, and I knew this was it.”
